Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth participation is a cornerstone of democratic governance and political development, as young people represent a significant demographic and a reservoir of innovative ideas. In Tarauni LGA, Kano State, student union elections have emerged as a microcosm of broader political processes, offering insights into the potential of youth involvement in shaping governance and policy (Ahmed & Garba, 2023; Musa et al., 2024). Through these elections, students engage in campaigning, voting, and leadership, cultivating political awareness and skills transferable to larger political arenas. Youth participation fosters political accountability, enhances representation, and nurtures future leaders. However, systemic issues such as limited resources, voter apathy, and external interference often constrain the impact of these elections on political development. This study investigates how youth participation through student union elections contributes to political development in Tarauni LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized potential of youth participation in driving political development, its impact in Tarauni LGA remains underutilized and underexplored. Student union elections, while instrumental in political socialization, face challenges such as limited institutional support, lack of transparency, and inadequate integration into broader political processes (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2023; Yusuf & Ibrahim, 2024). These barriers undermine the capacity of youth to influence governance and policy effectively. Furthermore, the role of these elections in nurturing future political leaders in Tarauni LGA has not been sufficiently studied. This research addresses these issues by examining the impact of youth participation through student union elections on political development.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study underscores the importance of youth participation in fostering political development, with a specific focus on student union elections in Tarauni LGA. The findings will inform educators, policymakers, and youth organizations on strategies to enhance the role of young people in governance.
